CCCTC Cosmetology
Instructor: Mrs. Darlene Smolko
dsmolko@ccctc.org

Cosmetology is the art and science of beautifying hair, skin and nails. It is a three-year program with 1250 hours of study. Students must apply in ninth grade for acceptance into the program. Successful completion of hours prepares graduates for PA State Board Exam and employment at entry-level jobs.

After 300 hours, students begin practicing their skills on the paying public. From September through early May, a clinic is run for the public, who pay cost of materials to have the services done. Students learn basics through advanced techniques including the following:

  • Hair Cutting
  • Permanent Waving
  • Facials
  • Hair Coloring and Lightening
  • Hair straightening
  • Scalp Treatments
  • Safety
  • Sanitation and Disinfection control
  • Manicures and Pedicures
  • Braiding
  • Long Hair Designs
  • Men's Hair Cutting
  • Color Analysis
  • People Skills
  • Career Preparation Skills
  • Personality Profiling
  • There is "Zero unemployment" in the industry. Average salon income including tips averages about $18.50 per hour. Salon owners averaged $22.03 per hour. Salaries earned are based on experience, abilities, quality of work, enthusiasm, and personality.

Cosmetologists can be self-employed or work for private or chain beauty salons throughout the country. Additionally, they can work as managers, teachers, salespersons, manicurists, estheticians, make-up artists, funeral home hairdressers, supply representatives, platform stylists, assistants, beauty magazine writers, or day spa owners.
